Eastern and Oriental Jakarta

I bet you've already heard about this new establishment of the 'street food chef', Will Meyrick. The man behind Sarong and MamaSan - Bali, now bringing his vibe to Jakarta. I'm truly respect his true passion on Asian cuisine. He always traveling around Asia, going around many cities or villages, enjoying cooking with 'ibu-ibu', and translating his experiences through his dishes. A Scottish-born chef with Asian at heart ;p

Been attending his cooking demo twice, Will is a chef who not hesitate to use chillies and spices! Eating his dishes could makes your eyes pop! Could be a bit problem for westerner, but for us Indonesian, it really doesn't matter for having 'hot' dishes ! :p Speaking of E and O, you can expect those kind of dish on this restaurant since it's bringing Thai-Vietnamese cuisine. Fresh, vibrant, flavorsome !

I love the pattern on the E and O's ceiling and the vintage jade-color chairs, a nice mix of bistro and oriental. We've also been told that their food are served in big portion, so it's better to share. The waiter also has knowledge of the dishes, and they advise us how to eat it. Great service !

For starter we're having Chicken Betel Leaf with Coriander, Roasted Shallots, Capsicum and roasted Chilli Relish - IDR 25.000/ piece. Betel leaf known as 'Daun Sirih' in Indonesian, actually has been used as an appetizer in Thai- cuisine. The betel leaf taste bit crunchy, so it gives a nice textures to it. And the 'heat' from the chili relish, yum !

Chicken and Prawn in Egg Net with Peanuts, Lemongrass, Mint and Pickle Cucumber and Shallots Relish - IDR 65.000. Beautifully presented, the chicken and prawn was minced and even though it has red color, it wasn't spicy at all.

Selection of Northern Thai Relishes with "Nam Prik Ong", "Nam Prik Goong", "Nam Prik Num", and Crispy Tempura Vegetables - IDR 125.000. Definitely got the 'wow-factor' the way they present this dish. I love how they put 'real' ( read : raw ) veggies on it, just like Indonesian 'lalap' ! :D We eat the fish and veggies tempura with 3 kinds of Thai -dips. Nam Prik Ong is Chicken and Tomato which tasted a bit sweet. Nam Prik Goong is Dried Shrimp and Chili which tasted a bit salty. Nam Prik Num is Eggplant and Green Chili which tasted sweet and spicy at the same time. Very enjoyable since you could get different kind of taste in one dish!

Take a little bit of everything and eat it! :p

Southern Hot and Sour Soup of Fish with Kedondong Leaves, Turmeric, Chillies, Lime Leaves and Coriander - IDR 80.000 ( Half )/ IDR 140.000 ( Regular ). The fish tasted fresh and perfectly cooked, the soup tasted a bit mild though, but it's a perfect balance since we had a couple spicy appetizer before :p

Grilled Beef Salad with Green Mango, Shallots, Peanuts, Mint and Nam Jim Jaew - IDR 90.000. Looking at this reminds you with Som Tam right ? The grilled beef was cooked medium rare, it was actually pretty good to eat it with crunchy green mangoes. Refreshing!

'Choo Chee' of Crispy Barramundi with Chili and Thai Basil - IDR 170.000. Barramundi is a type of fish that very popular in Australia. But from google I just known that this fish also been widely used in Thailand! Even though they usually labeled wrongly as snapper or sea bass. Lols. In this dish, the fish are deep fried just like many Asian cooking do. Super crispy! And Choo Chee is basically a type of red curry that's really thick and tasted bit sweet. And yes, this one is Addictive!

Twice Cooked Beef Short Ribs with Sweet Fish Sauce, Cucumber and Nam Pla Prik - IDR 220.000. Oh my this was THE BOMB. The cubed ribs was soooo tender and succulent. The glazey-caramelized sauce makes it even better, and the ginger gives a nice balance to it. Eat it with dip in to Nam Pla Prik ( Thai Chili Fish Sauce ) and to Grounded Szechuan Pepper, flavor bursting in your mouth!

After the spicy vibrant dishes now we're ready for something sweet. Been heard of this dessert was a hit so much and here it is, Durian Pannacotta with White Sticky Rice - IDR 50.000. I believe they're using Thai Monthong Durian for this one! Sweet and delicate! But the textures wasn't taste like pannacotta to me, it was like eating pure Durian purée ( which is good! lols ). I know not every people loves durian, but if you a big fan of this hedgehog-like fruit , this one will definitely satisfy you! Seriously I could not stop eating until my friend staring at me. lols.

Spoonful of heaven!

Cocoa Ganache with Peanut Butter Palm Sugar Ice Cream and Honeycomb Crumble - IDR 50.000. Peanut Butter Ice Cream ?? How could go wrong with that?! It was too enjoyable and you definitely can taste the peanut butter! The honeycomb crumble also gives a nice texture to it. I immediately forgot my diet when I ate this two desserts. lols.

For the drinks, we had some of their mocktails, Kiwi and Basil - IDR 45.000. Made with Kiwi, Pineapple, Orange Juice, Basil leaf, Homemade Basil Syrup, Soda. Basil on your drink ? It's surprisingly works!

Virgin Sling - IDR 45.000. Pineapple, Cloudy Apple Juice, Passionfruit, Almond Syrup, Soda. I like this one! Fresh!

Last words, I totally recommend you to try this restaurant. E and O's really taking Asian dishes to another level and you definitely got the new taste and experiences. You'll be blown away with their harmonious flavor! And also, thanks for Raechel and Alvina for inviting :)

  1. Really must go soon! I've been meaning to forever, but just never got around to it... Love MamaSan and Sarong and also his previous places in Bali. I'm sure E&O will be great too. Quite pricey though!
